When distressed denim began to trend again recently, I was very hesitant to purchase a pair, let alone, wear it out in public. I was concerned I would look “grungy”. However, I have come to the realization that this casual, yet comfortable street-chic look can in fact seem pulled together with just the right accessories. Give it a try!
You have the choice of hitting the snooze button over and over as you groan about the start of a new day, or you can jump out of bed in excitement, knowing that it’s a new morning and a fresh start. How we start our day, deeply affects how the rest of our day will be, even our week.
A morning routine celebrates the little things in life. It celebrates a clean slate, it celebrates the simplicity of taking things one day at a time, it celebrates the sense of calmness you will feel throughout the day, and it gets you off to a great start.
So what’s the best way to go about setting a morning routine? I will share with you my morning routine, which can be done in any order, or multitasked, like I do sometimes if I haven’t carved out enough time on a particular day.
- Movement (getting out of bed as soon as possible without pressing the snooze button on the alarm)
- Get my morning coffee started (drink a large glass of water while this is brewing)
- Make my bed (starts my day with order and there’s nothing better than getting into a neatly made, clean bed at the end of a long day)
- Pick out my outfit of the day (if I didn’t already the night before)
- Plan out my day with notes on my iPhone (things I need to accomplish in order of importance)
- Lay out my lunch by the front door next to all my bags (computer bag, gym bag)
- Meditate (the body and mind needs 5 or 10 minutes to connect while breathing; this allows for a sense of calmness and overall balance throughout the day; taking a moment of gratitude after is key)
- Eat oatmeal (with bananas, nut butter, and almond milk)
- Brush teeth, change, get ready
- Head out the door with a positive mindset (this is important to have a successful day)
Honoring a consistent morning ritual or routine is a commitment to your health and well-being. Because we all know, as soon as we step outside our front door, and tackle our morning commute, the focus shifts away from you, and onto matters outside of your control. Try carving out 30 min to 1 hour of time in the morning, just for YOU. No matter how foreign it may feel, try it for 30 days, which is when habits start forming. Morning routines will keep you feeling balanced, calm, simplified, in order, and inspired all day long. Rise and shine!
Growing up in a fitness oriented family, I find it odd that I was never a fan of exercising. Sure I danced for hours every day after school, but I was never thrilled to run a mile at school, or go hiking with the family (where my brother and I were told there was a shake shack at the top of the mountain…funny joke right?!). After graduating high school, and even more so now that I’m in my mid-20’s, my mindset has completely changed.
I take exercising on a regular basis very seriously, and know it’s a vital part of my everyday life to keep my body fueled and running smoothly. It keeps my muscles strong, my body toned, and keeps my mind right. I try and mix up my exercise routine as much as possible so I don’t get stuck in a “workout rut” as they call it. I absolutely love taking spin classes, weight/circuit training classes, high intensity interval training, stadiums at the track, and even just picked up yoga. What types of exercise do you take part in to stay fit?
It’s important the night before you plan on exercising to pack up your gym bag. This will allow you to practice self-discipline and will leave no room for excuses. JUST DO IT. This slogan has definitely been used for a good reason…it works! No matter what mood you’re in, try your best to get your body moving every day for 30 minutes or more. I’m not saying you need to go run a 10k, go lift heavy weights, or take a killer spin class, all I’m saying is it’s important to just get your body up and moving!
Here are a few good reasons why exercise can make you happy and keep you healthy! It’s a quick read and TOTALLY worth it!
iPhone 6 Case: Pineapple Pandemonium from Casetify
I’m absolutely obsessed with my new iPhone 6 Case that defines and screams out SUMMER! It’s bright, fun, pineapple theme (which is trending now) is clearly something to keep around not just in the summer, but all year round. It makes me feel like I’m on a tropical, beach vacation, on a faraway island!
A friend referred this book to me for an easy yet intriguing summer read. I bought it, started reading it on a short flight, and before I knew it was half-way deep in the book. I was immediately drawn to the entertaining “how-to-guide” of creating a life that you totally love. Once you start reading this book, you’ll understand some of the secrets to a life you deserve, and how good you really are at controlling the outcome of your own life based on the choices you make and the mindset you have.
Nail Polish: Essie “Play Date”
One of the perks of being an elementary school teacher is the Summer and time off that I get to enjoy. Most people think of teachers as having TOO much time on their hands in the Summer months, but not me. I’ve found many ways to keep myself occupied and busy, which I love. I’m constantly running around, trying to conquer a long To-Do list I’ve created for myself. With that being said, it’s crucial to remember to make time for things most important. This past weekend, I spent some quality time in the HOT Arizona sunshine with toes that matched the prettiest pool tiles I’ve ever laid eyes on!
Living in Santa Barbara my whole life, I’m pretty much accustomed to the “June Gloom” we encounter every year. It seems that people either love it, or hate it. I, however, have learned to embrace it. Every morning, very early, the fog rolls in over the ocean, and sometimes is so thick it’s essentially sprinkling. Mid-afternoon the fog burns off, the sunshine is bright, and people are seen smiling from ear to ear. Why is it that the sunshine always brings out the best in people? Whatever the reason, I believe it is important to find a way to bring smiles and sunshine even on the foggiest of days. Putting on this extremely soft yellow sweatshirt with the perfect life mantra on it (Eat Well, Work Hard, Love Truly, Travel Often), immediately brought sunshine to the gloomy morning and quickly put a smile on my face. There’s just something majestic about a foggy morning, spent drinking coffee, in a cozy sweatshirt, taking a long beach walk, chatting with a good friend. I can’t help but to be grateful for the opportunity every day to wake up and enjoy the gift of living.
